Ash Wednesday
Lent is a time of grace during which the desert becomes once again—as the prophet Hosea foretells— the place of first love (cf. Hosea 2:16-17). God educates his people so that they may emerge from slavery and experience the passage from death to life. Like a bridegroom, he draws us back to himself and whispers words of love into our hearts.
The beginning of Lent is marked by the imposition of ashes: the priest places a little ashes on the forehead of each member of the faithful, as a sign of human frailty, but also of hope in God's mercy. While marking the forehead, the priest says to the person:
" Repent and believe in the Good News."
