Universal Prayer
What is the sky?
Heaven is not a place that was closed before Christ's ascension by a positive decree of God, only to be opened afterward by another positive decree. On the contrary, the reality of "heaven" only becomes effective in the intimate encounter between God and humanity. Heaven is to be defined as the contact of the being of humanity with the being of God; this intimate encounter of God and humanity was definitively realized in Christ, when, through death, he passed beyond bios [biological life] to new life. Heaven is thus the future of humanity, which humanity cannot give itself, which remains closed to it as long as it relies solely on itself, and which was opened for the first time and radically in the person whose place of existence was God and through whom God entered into the being of humanity.
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger († 2022) was elected pope in 2005, he exercised his pontificate under the name of Benedict XVI until 2013.
